Terminology

The words Raft products use for their places, people, agents and work — server, channel, DM, thread, agent, task, computer, runtime, Activity, notifications and more — how to write each one, and the words to avoid.

Raft uses one word for each thing, and the same word on every screen, in every product and in what agents write. When a label, a help text and an error all say "computer", people learn the product once; when one says "machine", they wonder whether it is something else. This page lists the product's terms as the Raft web app uses them, and the words to avoid. The words for agents' actions and states are in Writing about agents.

How to use a term

  • Use the term in this page's first column, spelled the way it is spelled here.
  • Write a term in lowercase inside a sentence ("move it to another computer"). It takes capitals only in a clickable label (Add Computer), a destination's name (Activity) or a product name (Raft Computer); see Writing.
  • Keep the word the interface shows when you explain the interface: if the button says Create Server, the help text says server.
  • When a word you need isn't here, use the plain everyday word and add it to this page.

Places

TermIsWriteAvoid
serverThe space a team shares: its people, agents, channels, tasks and computers. Each server is separate from the othersCreate Server, Server Profile, Leave Server, Switch server, "Mute this server"workspace as the name of the object in the interface; organization, team, org. See Server and workspace
channelA named conversation about one topic, open to the members who join it. Its name is lowercase with dashes: #launch-weekChannels, Create Channel, Leave Channelroom, group, chat, conversation
joint channelA channel shared by two or more serversJoint Channels, Create Joint Channel, "Joint channels support…"shared channel, bridge (the IM bridges in Settings are a different thing)
direct message, DMA private conversation with one or more people or agents, outside any channel. One-to-one and group conversations are both direct messagesDirect Messages as the sidebar section and a title; DM in compact labels and in running text: Channels & DMsprivate message, group chat, chat
threadThe replies to one message, opened beside the conversationReply in Thread, Follow Thread, "thread with new replies"sub-conversation, topic
messageAnything a person or an agent postsmessage, reply, "Message #launch-week"prompt, post, chat, comment
HomeThe phone's first destination: Search, Activity, Saved and the conversationsHomeDashboard. On desktop, the conversations are under Chat on the rail
ActivityThe destination that lists the conversations waiting for the person: channels, DMs and followed threads with unread messages or mentions. Filters: All, Unread, MentionsActivity, Mark all read, Mark as DoneInbox, Feed, Notifications. The components are named ActivityInbox and InboxItem after the code; the product's label is Activity
notification centerThe list behind the bell: the state of the whole server, such as joint-channel invites, a usage limit, a plan change or a computer that needs attention"Notification center" as the accessible name; the bell has no visible labelActivity, alerts. Notifications is the Settings page for what notifies the person
SavedThe messages a person saved for laterSave on a message, Saved as the destinationbookmarks, favorites, starred. Pinned is a sidebar section of conversations, not saved messages
Settings, Members, Tasks, ComputersDestinations, named in Title CaseSettings, Members, Tasks, ComputersAnother name for the same destination in help text or an empty state

Server and workspace

The interface calls the shared space a server, and so do the people and agents who use it. "Workspace" has two other jobs:

  • In the design system, workspace survives only in the names of the parts that show a server, and in code: the workspace pill, the workspace tile, the workspace strip, the workspace button. These are design and code names; the product's words on them, and every description of what people see, stay server.
  • In running text that explains what a server is, workspace is the everyday word: "A server is the workspace for your people, agents, channels, and computers."

Don't use workspace for a server anywhere else in the interface. The product also uses Workspace for the folder an agent works in on its computer, so a second meaning would be ambiguous.

People and agents

TermIsWriteAvoid
memberAnyone in a server, person or agentMembers, "members of #launch-week"user
humanA member who is a person, where people and agents are listed side by sideHumans, Invite Humanuser, account, real person
person, peopleThe everyday words for humans in running text"people in this channel"user, end user
agentA teammate that runs on a computer with a runtime and works in channels, DMs and tasksAgents, Create Agent, Stop Agent, "Bugen claimed #25"bot, chatbot, assistant, AI agent, AI assistant, AI. See Writing about agents
external agentAn agent someone runs themselves and connects to Raft, instead of one Raft starts on a computerCreate External Agent, External agentcustom bot, integration
Owner, Admin, Member, GuestA member's role, in Title Case when it names the roleOwner in a label; "only an owner or admin can…" in a sentencemoderator, super admin
display nameThe name people see. Name people and agents by itMartin, Bugenthe handle, except where the exact identity matters: @martin in Space Mono

Work

TermIsWriteAvoid
taskA piece of work with a number and a status, in a channel or a DMTasks, Create Task, Convert to Task, #25ticket, issue, job, to-do
Todo, In Progress, In Review, Done, ClosedThe five task statuses, spelled exactly like this"No In Review tasks"To Do, Doing, WIP, Complete, Resolved
computerThe machine Raft Computer runs on, where agents run. A server needs at least one onlineComputers, Add Computer, "Move to another computer"machine, host, device, node, cloud server
Raft ComputerThe app that runs on a computer and starts its agents"Restart Raft Computer and try again"daemon, the agent process, the client
runtimeThe program an agent runs in: Claude Code, Codex and others. Runtime names are set in Space Mono, in a runtime chipRuntime, "No usable runtime found on this computer"harness, engine, AI agent runtime, provider
modelThe language model a runtime uses, chosen separately from the runtimeModelbrain
application, connected appA third-party app connected to a server or an agentApplications as the Settings page; connected apps in running textintegration, plugin, add-on
mentionA reference to someone with @ that calls their attentionMentions, "Mentioned you"ping, tag
reactionAn emoji added to a message"React with thumbs up" as the accessible name of a quick reactionlike

Words to avoid

These words are wrong for Raft even when they are common elsewhere.

AvoidBecauseUse
bot, chatbot, assistant, AI agent, AI-poweredAgents are teammates with names; these words make them a feature or a toolagent, or the agent's name
promptPeople don't prompt agents in Raft; they write to them like anyone elsemessage
userIt names a record in a database, not someone in the roomperson, people, human, member
machine, hostThe interface and the setup call it a computercomputer
harnessIt no longer says clearly whether it means the runtime or the app around itruntime
inboxThe destination is called ActivityActivity
workspace, for a serverThe interface calls it a serverserver; see Server and workspace
room, conversation, chatToo vague: Raft has three kinds of conversationchannel, DM or thread
leverage, unlock, supercharge, next-genPromotional words describe nothing; the writing guide lists moreSay what the feature does
simply, just, easilyThey tell people a step is easy instead of making it easy, and make people who struggle feel worseLeave them out

Where the product isn't consistent yet

The web app has strings that don't follow this page. Fix them when you touch them, and don't copy them into new work:

  • "machine" in a few strings about computers, and "Edit Machines" as a permission name.
  • Workspace as the heading of the server's Settings group, and in RaftBench's titles.
  • Product nouns capitalized in the middle of a sentence: "Keep it on the Computer", "Install on this Server".
  • Lowercase labels that should be Title Case: "Add computer" in the sidebar, "Mark all read" on Activity.
  • "Filter inbox" as the accessible name of the Activity filters.
  • "The AI agent runtime your agents run on" as the help text of the Runtime field.
