# Why Raft looks this way > Where Raft's look comes from, why the product turns the brand down for all-day use, the materials every screen is made of, and what one tone across the product line means. Source: https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/why-raft-looks-this-way. Generated from the current release; where it differs from what you remember, this page is right. Raft is a workspace where people and agents chat, hand off work, write, meet and ship in the same place, and people keep it open for most of their working day. Its look starts from the brutal style of the Raft website and keeps the same materials, but uses them as quietly as an all-day tool needs: brand color only where it carries a meaning, and white paper wherever people read. This page explains that reasoning, so that a new screen or a new product can follow it without a rule for every case. The rules themselves are in [Principles](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/principles.md). ## Where it comes from The Raft website at [raft.build](https://raft.build) is brutal: a flat yellow field, thick ink lines, square pixels, hard offset shadows, halftone dots, Space Grotesk for text and Space Mono for anything a machine wrote. It is built to be remembered at a glance, by someone who sees it once. The product keeps those materials. The yellow, the ink line, the square pixel and the two typefaces are recognizably the same ones; the pixel avatars of agents, the drawn reactions and the square presence lights all come from the same pixel grid. A person who arrives from the website should know they are in the same place. ## Why the product turns the volume down The product is not seen once. People read it for hours, every day, often with several agents working on the same screen. Every saturated color, heavy line and moving thing is paid for again each minute it is on screen, and whatever the brand spends on decoration it takes away from the signals people need: what is selected, what waits for them, what went wrong. So the product keeps the website's materials and spends them only where they say something. In practice: - **Yellow moves to the frame.** The outer chrome is on every screen but nobody reads it, so it can carry the brand at almost no cost. Everything people read sits on white. - **Lines are lighter and fewer.** Regions are separated by one 1px seam at 45% ink: 2px black lines cut a screen into boxes. The ink border is kept for controls, where it means something ([0009](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0009-seams-and-no-control-shadows.md)). - **Controls have no hard shadow.** A control already says "press here" with its ink border; a shadow would be a fourth signal, doesn't show in dark mode, and a press that moves the control shakes its neighbors. The hard shadow stays for brand illustration only ([0009](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0009-seams-and-no-control-shadows.md)). - **Saturated color shrinks to a pixel.** A screen can hold a dozen status chips, so each one is a soft tint with one square pixel of saturated color ([Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#soft-tints)). - **Status stands still.** A breathing presence light makes the page render at the screen's refresh rate (measured at 144fps and 80% GPU with a dialog open, against 2fps and 3% once stopped), and a dozen pulsing avatars get in the way of reading. A working agent is a still yellow light and a sentence ([0006](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0006-working-agents-in-place.md)). - **Overlays don't perform.** Dialogs and other centered overlays appear in place, without animation; only the drawer and the bottom sheet slide, because the slide says where they came from (a dialog with fields is a sheet on a phone; [Motion](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/motion.md#usage)). The brand doesn't disappear; it is placed by how close a page is to a first impression. Working pages (lists, conversations, tasks, settings, empty states) get the frame and small stickers. A profile and the last step of a server's setup add the large pixel sticker with its hard shadow. Sign-in and the pages that create an account or a server add the logo, halftone and the tilted preview. The closer to a first impression, the more of the website a page may use ([Brand](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/brand.md#how-much-brand)). ## The materials, from outside to inside Every Raft screen is made of the same four materials, and color steps down from the outside in: yellow, then cream, then white. | Material | What it is | Why | | --- | --- | --- | | **Frame** | The outer chrome: the desktop rail, the web top bar, the top bar of a phone's top-level pages. Yellow in light mode, a neutral dark in dark mode. It shows your server, not the Raft logo | It is on every screen and never read, so it carries the brand without costing attention. In dark mode a yellow frame would be the brightest thing on the screen, which is what dark mode exists to avoid ([0012](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0012-yellow-rail-selection-in-dark-mode.md)) | | **Paper** | The background content sits on: white for content, the website's cream for the desktop sidebar | Reading happens here, so it has the least color. The cream sidebar is the one step between the frame and the paper | | **Ink** | The color of text and of control borders. Lines, secondary text and hover overlays are translucent steps of the same ink | One dark color for everything people read and press keeps the screen calm, and makes the ink border a reliable sign of "this is a control" | | **Stickers** | Every block of brand color (avatars, the selected item, the location tile, the primary button, badges) has a 1.5px ink edge and ink type | Sticker colors are only 1.4:1 to 2.8:1 apart from paper, so without an edge a block of color doesn't hold its shape. The edge makes it read as a cut-out shape stuck on the page, as on the website | Two consequences follow from the materials, and they decide many small cases: - **Stickers are the same in both modes.** A pink button, a square avatar and ink type look the same in dark mode; dark mode changes only surfaces, ink, lines and tints, and adds a die-cut edge around each sticker so it still separates from the dark surface ([0023](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0023-stickers-in-dark-mode.md), [Dark mode](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/dark-mode.md)). Components don't switch styles between modes. - **Square belongs to the pixel family; soft belongs to containers.** Identities and dots are square pixels, like the website's pixels. Cards, menus and dialogs have soft radii. Only switches and radios are round, because people recognize them by that shape ([Shape](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/shape.md)). ## People and agents in one place Raft is built for people and agents working together, and the look supports that directly: - Agents and people use the same messages, the same rows and the same square avatars. The face says who it is; an agent's face is its pixel avatar, so the shape doesn't need to say it again ([0023](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0023-stickers-in-dark-mode.md)). - Both profiles use the same 99px avatar on the same page ([Identity and presence](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/identity-and-presence.md#the-same-as-people)): agents and people are equals. - Space Grotesk sets what people say; Space Mono sets what machines write: IDs, times, counts, runtimes and event lines such as "Bugen claimed #25". A reader can tell at a glance which is which. - What an agent is doing is written where the agent already appears (its row, the place it works in, its avatar's light), not in a separate live bar that changes all the time ([0006](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0006-working-agents-in-place.md)). - Agents are named and described with teammate verbs (claim, hand off, review, ship), never as "AI" or "bot", and never marked with sparkles ([Writing](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/content/writing.md#voice), [Iconography](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/iconography.md)). How agents are shown in detail is in [People and agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents.md) and [Agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents.md). ## One tone across the product line Raft Chat is the first product; Tasks, Calendar, Artifacts, Sites, Meeting and Canvas follow. "One tone" means that a person moving from one product to another doesn't have to learn a new language. In practice, every product shares: - the materials and the order of color from the outside in: frame, sidebar, paper; - the meaning of each color: yellow is you, pink is to do, cyan is this item, orange interrupts, red is irreversible, and the five task statuses and five presence lights mean the same everywhere ([Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#meanings-of-color)); - the meaning of each line: a hairline inside content, a seam between regions, an ink border on a control; - the shapes, the type roles, the states, the motion rules and the voice of the words; - the components: a menu, a dialog, a status chip or an avatar is the raft-ui one in every product. What each product decides for itself is its structure: which destinations it has, what each screen shows and what goes where. That lives on the product's own page under [Products](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/products), not in the shared rules. So a new product doesn't get its own accent color, its own button style, its own dark theme or its own way of showing that an agent is working. It gets its own destinations and screens, built from the same materials. A fair test: put a screen of the new product next to a screen of Raft Chat. The frame, the paper, the stickers and the meaning of each color should match; only the content and the structure should differ. ## Related - [Principles](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/principles.md): the rules this reasoning leads to. - [Designing a new feature](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/designing-a-new-feature.md): how to apply them to new work. - [Brand](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/brand.md): how much brand each kind of page may use. - [Page structure](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/page-structure.md): where the frame, sidebar and paper are on each screen. - [Decisions](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions.md): the major choices, and the alternatives they were weighed against. --- # Principles > The seven rules every Raft screen follows, each with the reasoning that lets you apply it to a case the docs don't cover. Source: https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/principles. Generated from the current release; where it differs from what you remember, this page is right. Seven rules hold on every screen of every Raft product. Each one is short enough to check in review, and each comes with its reason, because a rule without a reason gets broken the first time it is inconvenient. When a case isn't covered anywhere in the docs, the reasons decide it. Where the look comes from is in [Why Raft looks this way](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/why-raft-looks-this-way.md); how to use these rules on new work is in [Designing a new feature](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/designing-a-new-feature.md). The numbers are stable: other pages refer to a principle by its number. ## 1. Yellow goes on the frame only The frame (the desktop rail, the web top bar, the top bar of a phone's top-level pages) is yellow. Everything people read sits on paper. In dark mode the frame is a neutral dark. **Why.** The frame is on every screen, but nobody reads it, so color there carries the brand at almost no cost to attention. Content is read for hours; a saturated yellow behind text tires the eye and leaves no room for yellow to mean anything else. Keeping yellow off the content is also what lets yellow mean "you" (principle 4): a selected row can only stand out if the page around it isn't yellow. In dark mode the frame turns neutral because dark mode exists to bring brightness down, and a yellow frame would be the brightest thing on the screen ([0012](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0012-yellow-rail-selection-in-dark-mode.md)). A web top bar is part of the frame, not content, so it is yellow like the rail ([Page structure](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/page-structure.md#the-web-top-bar)). To apply it to something new, ask whether people read it or whether it holds the screen together. Chrome that is on every screen and holds no content is frame; a panel, a page or a card that people read is paper. Applied in: [Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#principles), [Page structure](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/page-structure.md#layers-from-the-outside-in), [Brand](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/brand.md#how-much-brand), [Dark mode](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/dark-mode.md#what-changes). ## 2. Three lines, three meanings A hairline sits inside content, a seam sits between regions, and an ink border marks a control. Two regions are separated by exactly one line. **Why.** Lines are read as structure, so each kind of line answers one question: a hairline says "these items belong together", a seam says "one region ends here", and an ink border says "you can press or type here". If a card had an ink border it would look clickable; if regions were separated by heavy black lines the screen would read as a stack of boxes ([0009](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0009-seams-and-no-control-shadows.md)). The seam is 45% ink because, of the values tried, it is the lightest that passes 3:1 on white, and on the yellow frame it reads as a dark gold; at 50% it starts to look like a control's border. Two 1px lines side by side read as one 2px line, which is why only one region owns the line between two regions. To apply it, name the boundary before you draw a line. If it isn't inside content, between regions or around a control, it doesn't need a line; change the fill or the spacing instead. Applied in: [Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#lines), [Shape](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/shape.md#stroke-widths), [Page structure](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/page-structure.md#one-line-between-two-regions). ## 3. A block of color is a sticker Every block of brand color has a 1.5px ink edge and ink type, and doesn't invert in dark mode. Soft tints are highlights and have no edge. Controls have no shadow. **Why.** Sticker colors are only 1.4:1 to 2.8:1 apart from paper, so without an edge a block of color doesn't hold its shape. Ink type on a sticker reaches at least 6.8:1, where white type on pink reaches 2.4:1 ([0014](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0014-pink-unread-with-ink.md)). A sticker stays the same in both modes, so a pink button or an avatar is one thing everywhere; dark mode adds a die-cut edge instead of changing the sticker, and components never switch styles ([0023](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0023-stickers-in-dark-mode.md)). Soft tints exist for the opposite case: a screen can hold a dozen status chips, and a tint with one saturated pixel keeps that screen quiet ([Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#soft-tints)). Controls have no shadow because "press here" is already said by the ink border, the pink and the one-per-screen rule; a shadow is a fourth signal, doesn't show in dark mode, and a press that moves the control shakes what is next to it ([0009](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0009-seams-and-no-control-shadows.md)). To apply it, decide whether the color is a thing (a sticker: edge, ink type, same in both modes) or a highlight behind a thing (a soft tint: no edge). Only things that float above the page cast a shadow, and all of them cast the same soft one. Applied in: [Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#stickers), [Dark mode](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/dark-mode.md#the-die-cut-edge), [Elevation](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/elevation.md#principles). ## 4. Yellow is you, pink is to do, notices are neutral Yellow is where you are, what you selected, what calls you and what you searched for. Pink is at most one primary button per screen, and what waits for you. The item singled out in content is cyan. Toasts and tooltips are neutral dark. **Why.** When each color has one meaning, a color on screen always tells the person something, and they learn it once for every product. The meanings are chosen so they never compete: - Selection has three meanings, so it has three looks: where you are in navigation is yellow, the item singled out in content is cyan, and a chosen value is ink. If all three were yellow, opening a list would fill it with yellow ([0011](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0011-yellow-navigation-selection.md), [RadioGroup](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/radio-group.md#states)). - Pink marks one primary action, so a second pink button removes the primary action instead of adding one. Unread is pink, not yellow, because yellow is also the busy light of a working agent ([0014](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0014-pink-unread-with-ink.md)). - A notice is an aside. A yellow toast would compete with selection, so toasts and tooltips are neutral, and no button is yellow ([Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#principles)). - Meaning wins over placement: in dark mode the frame is neutral, but the selected rail item is still a yellow sticker, because "you are here" is not part of the frame ([0012](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0012-yellow-rail-selection-in-dark-mode.md)). To apply it, say which meaning a new use of color has: you, to do, this item, interrupts or irreversible, or an identity or a status. If it has none of them, remove the color. Applied in: [Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#meanings-of-color), [States](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/states.md#usage), [Button](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/button.md). ## 5. Status colors have fixed meanings Five task statuses and five presence lights, each with one color, none of them blinking. Something going wrong is orange; red is only for consequences that cannot be undone. **Why.** Statuses are read at a glance, across many rows, screens and products, so their colors have to mean the same thing everywhere and stay the same over time; `presence-busy` even has its own value, so that a change of brand color doesn't change what busy looks like. Red is kept for what cannot be undone so that it still stops people at a delete button; if every error were red, the one irreversible action would look like everything else, so recoverable problems, warnings and actions that stop or reset are orange. Status never moves on its own: a looping animation makes the page render at the screen's refresh rate (144fps and 80% GPU against 2fps and 3% once stopped), and a dozen pulsing avatars get in the way of reading ([0006](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0006-working-agents-in-place.md)). A working agent is a still yellow light and a sentence about what it is doing. To apply it, map a new state to an existing status before inventing a color. A state that loops or blinks needs another way to show itself: words, or a change that happens once. Applied in: [Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#statuses), [Motion](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/motion.md#principles), [Agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/working-agents.md#where-working-shows). ## 6. Square is Raft Every identity is a square sticker, and every dot is a square pixel. Round is only for switches and radios, which follow platform convention. **Why.** The square pixel is the brand's own shape, from the website's pixel grid to the agents' 8×8 faces, and it is what makes a Raft screen recognizable when the color is turned down. People and agents both have square avatars: the face already says who it is, so the shape doesn't need to say it again ([0023](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0023-stickers-in-dark-mode.md)). Dots and the spinner are square for the same reason ([Shape](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/shape.md#principles)). Pixels are hard and containers are soft: cards, menus and dialogs have radii, because they hold content rather than stand for something. Switches and radios are the exception because people recognize them by their round shape; a square switch isn't read as a switch ([Switch](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/switch.md#rules)). To apply it, ask whether the new element stands for someone or something (square, from the pixel family), holds content (a soft container radius), or is a control people know only by its round shape (round, and there are two). Applied in: [Shape](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/shape.md#radii), [Avatar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/avatar.md), [Spinner](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/spinner.md). ## 7. No all caps Clickable text is Title Case, everything else is sentence case, and hierarchy comes from size, weight and color. Space Grotesk is what people say; Space Mono is what machines write. **Why.** All caps removes the shape of words, which makes them slower to read, and Chinese has no case, so in mixed text capitalized English stands out more than intended ([0002](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0002-no-all-caps.md)). Title Case is kept for what people can click, so casing itself tells them what is a control. The two typefaces separate two voices: messages, labels and titles in Space Grotesk; IDs, times, counts, runtimes, event lines and code in Space Mono. In a server where agents write as much as people, that lets a reader tell at a glance what a person said from what a machine produced, even inside one sentence ("Bugen claimed #25"). To apply it, set anything a machine produced in Space Mono, anything clickable in Title Case and everything else in sentence case, and make a heading stand out by size or weight, never by capitals. Applied in: [Typography](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/typography.md#casing), [Writing](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/content/writing.md#casing). ## When principles pull apart The principles rarely conflict, and when they seem to, the system resolves them the same way: - **Meaning comes before placement.** A yellow sticker that means "you are here" stays yellow on a neutral dark frame ([0012](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0012-yellow-rail-selection-in-dark-mode.md)). - **Legibility comes before the exact brand value.** Pink is lighter than the product's original pink so ink on it reaches the contrast of the other stickers ([0001](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0001-softer-pink.md)); tertiary and error text are adjusted until they pass 4.5:1 on every surface ([Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#contrast)). - **Less comes before more.** When a screen tires the eye, remove color first, then lines, then motion. ## Related - [Why Raft looks this way](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/why-raft-looks-this-way.md): the character these rules come from. - [Designing a new feature](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/designing-a-new-feature.md): the questions and the checklist built on these rules. - [Decisions](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions.md): the major choices, and the alternatives they were weighed against. --- # Designing a new feature > The questions to ask before you build something new, the process from the closest pattern to the components, a self-review checklist, and when to change the system itself. Source: https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/designing-a-new-feature. Generated from the current release; where it differs from what you remember, this page is right. Start every new screen, panel or flow from what the system already has: answer six questions, find the closest pattern, compose it from raft-ui components, and decide which part belongs to one product and which to every product. Check the result against the list at the end of this page. Change the system itself only when the work shows that a rule is missing or wrong, and then change the guideline in the same pull request. ## The questions to ask Answer these before you draw or write anything. Each answer decides something specific. 1. **Does every product need this, or only one?** Something every product needs follows the [patterns](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns) and, if it is new, becomes one. Something only one product needs goes on that product's page under [Products](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/products). Either way, look first at how the product already does it: the shipped product is the reference for structure. 2. **Is it content, a region or a control?** That decides its surface and its line: content sits on paper and is divided by hairlines; a region is separated from its neighbors by one seam; a control has an ink border ([Principles](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/principles/principles.md#2-three-lines-three-meanings)). 3. **Which is the screen's primary action?** Only that one is pink, and a screen may have none. If more than one action could be the primary one, the hierarchy is wrong: decide which action the screen exists for ([Button](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/button.md)). 4. **What does each color mean?** Every color is an identity, a status, a signal (you, to do, this item) or a consequence (interrupts, irreversible). If a color is none of these, remove it ([Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#meanings-of-color)). 5. **Does it work in dark mode, at 320px wide, and with the keyboard alone?** Design for 390px and make everything fit at 320px ([Responsive layout](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/responsive.md)). Every element people can reach with the keyboard shows the focus ring ([Elevation](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/elevation.md#focus-ring)). Every new component is checked in both modes ([Dark mode](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/dark-mode.md)). 6. **Will it tire someone who looks at it for hours?** If so, remove color first, then lines, then motion. Nothing that shows status may loop or blink ([Motion](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/motion.md)). ## The process ### 1. Find the closest pattern Most new work is a variation of something the system already describes. Before designing anything, find it: | You are building | Start from | | --- | --- | | A new screen, panel or destination | [Page structure](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/page-structure.md), [Navigation](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/navigation.md) and [Responsive layout](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/responsive.md) | | Anything an agent does or shows | [Agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents.md) and [People and agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents.md) | | Messages, threads, the composer | [Conversation](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/conversation.md) | | Tasks and their statuses | [Tasks](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/tasks.md) | | A form or a settings page | [Forms](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/forms.md) | | A result, an error, a loading or empty state | [Feedback](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/feedback.md) | | Something built from several existing parts | [Composites](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components.md) | Then read the product's own page for the area you are working in (for Raft Chat, [Raft Chat](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/products/raft-chat.md)) to see what it already puts there. ### 2. Choose the components Compose the feature from raft-ui. The [components overview](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components.md) lists what exists, and [Choosing a component](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components.md) picks one where several look right: which control for which choice, which feedback for which message, which overlay for which job. - Use the raft-ui component wherever one fits, including for small pieces such as badges, chips, separators and fields. A hand-built copy drifts from the original the first time either changes. - Read the component's doc before using it: its "When to use" table, its rules and its accessibility section. - If nothing fits, check [Composites](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components.md) for a combination of existing parts. Build markup by hand only where raft-ui has no fit, say so in the pull request, and propose the missing piece to raft-ui instead of keeping a local copy. - Use semantic tokens for every value. Don't use Tailwind's default palette or raw colors. How to install and set up raft-ui is in [Use raft-ui](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/about/use-raft-ui.md). ### 3. Decide what is shared and what is product-specific Write each new rule where it belongs, so that the next product inherits what it should and nothing more: | If the rule is about | It goes in | | --- | --- | | A value or a rule every component follows | A foundation | | One component | That component's doc | | How components combine, in any product | A pattern | | One product's destinations, screens and what goes where | That product's page | A rule that holds only for Raft Chat ("which four destinations the phone tab bar shows") is a product rule. A rule that would be the same in Tasks or Calendar ("a problem in one panel is a notice under its header") is shared. When in doubt, ask whether a second product would have to make the same choice for the same reason; if it would, the rule is shared. ### 4. Write the words Labels, titles, empty states and errors follow [Writing](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/content/writing.md): Title Case for what people click, sentence case for everything else, agents named with teammate verbs, and a button's label repeated as the title of the dialog it opens. ## Self-review checklist Go through this list before you ask for review. Each item is something a reviewer will check. - [ ] Yellow is only on the frame and on things that mean "you": the selected item in navigation, an on switch, a mention of you, search hits. - [ ] At most one pink button on the screen, for the action the screen exists for. - [ ] Every color on screen is an identity, a status, a signal or a consequence. Red appears only for what cannot be undone. - [ ] Each line is a hairline inside content, a seam between regions or an ink border on a control, and two regions share exactly one line. - [ ] Every block of brand color has an ink edge and ink type; soft tints have no edge; no control or card has a shadow. - [ ] Identities and dots are square; only switches and radios are round. - [ ] No text is in all caps. Clickable text is Title Case; IDs, times, counts and event lines are in Space Mono. - [ ] Nothing that shows status loops or blinks, and every animation stops with `prefers-reduced-motion`. - [ ] Agents and people use the same rows, messages and avatars, and what an agent is doing is shown where it already appears. - [ ] The screen works in dark mode, with stickers unchanged and their die-cut edge. - [ ] Everything fits at 320px wide, and touch targets are at least 44px. - [ ] Everything works with the keyboard alone and shows the focus ring. It is not pink: the screen's one pink button is the composer's send button. - When the action needs more than a yes, let the button open the ordinary dialog for it, filled in with the agent's values. The person can change them there before anything is created. Don't make the fields on the card editable: the card is a summary. - Show the values the person needs to check as properties, the agent's reason under Reason, the permissions an app asks for as a scrolling list, and a standing note from Raft as a neutral notice. - Run the action as the person who confirmed it, with that person's permissions. - Show no confirm button to someone who may not act. Fold the card and say why under its title: "Join #launch-week to run this.", "You need the Create Agents permission — ask a Server owner or admin to run this." ### States | State | The card | | --- | --- | | Waiting | Open, with its confirm button. Others see that the agent "encountered an error", because the detail can contain private information. - Confirm Stop Agent and Restart / Reset with a dialog: both interrupt the agent's work ([Feedback](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/feedback.md#confirming)). - Don't put an agent's error in a toast. A toast is for a one-off action with no place of its own; an agent's error lasts until someone fixes it. ## What the product doesn't do yet The component doc for [MessageActionCard](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/message-action-card.md) describes a few things Raft Chat doesn't ship: - A ghost Edit First button beside the confirm button, and a Decline button with a Declined state. In the product, the creation actions open their dialog from the confirm button, and a card nobody acts on stays waiting. - A "Needs an admin" status, with a pink pixel, on a waiting card. The product shows no status until something changes. - A list of waiting cards in Activity. In the product, a waiting card is found in its conversation. - A toast when the action fails. The product shows the reason in a banner inside the card. ## Related - [Tasks](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/tasks.md): the five statuses and task details. - [Conversation](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/conversation.md): the timeline, grouping and threads. - [Writing about agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/writing-about-agents.md): how event lines and agents' messages are worded. --- # Identity and presence > How an agent is recognized (its pixel face, the agent tag and the runtime chip), how it is treated the same as a person, what its presence light says, and how a message an assistant sent for a person is marked. Source: https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/identity-and-presence. Generated from the current release; where it differs from what you remember, this page is right. An agent is recognized by its face. Agents and people use the same square avatar, the same message and the same rows; an agent's avatar holds its pixel face, a person's holds a photo or initials. Where it has to be explicit that someone is an agent, its profile adds an `agent` tag and a runtime chip. How an agent is doing is the presence light on its avatar. ## When it applies Anywhere an agent appears: messages, the sidebar and Home, member lists, task assignees, mention suggestions, profile cards and profiles. Where an agent's work shows is in [Working agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/working-agents.md). ## Recognizing an agent | Where | What says it is an agent | | --- | --- | | Everywhere | The pixel avatar: one of the 72 faces in [`design/assets/Agents`](https://github.com/botiverse/raft-design/tree/main/design/assets/Agents), on the fill that comes with it ([Avatar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/avatar.md)) | | A message | The pixel avatar and its presence light. The profile of an agent from another server, met in a Joint channel, shows the tag without the runtime chip. - An agent without a chosen face shows `robot`. An agent that was deleted keeps its messages; its avatar is grayed and a Deleted badge follows its name. ## The same as people People and agents are members of the same server, so they use the same parts. | Both get | Component | | --- | --- | | The same message, grouped and threaded the same way | [MessageItem](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/message-item.md) | | The same square sticker, at the same five sizes | [Avatar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/avatar.md) | | The same row in lists | [Sidebar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/sidebar.md), [ListRow](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/list-row.md) | | The same profile, with the same 99px avatar: neither profile is a smaller version of the other | [ProfilePanel](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/profile-panel.md) | | Mentions by name, task assignment, thread following | [Conversation](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/conversation.md), [Tasks](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/tasks.md) | ```tsx import { Avatar, AvatarBadge, AvatarFallback, MessageItem, MessageItemAvatarSlot, MessageItemBody, MessageItemContent, MessageItemHeader, MessageItemSender, MessageItemTime, } from "@botiverse/raft-ui"; export function MessageItemPersonAndAgentContent() { return (

); } ``` What differs is only what has to: the face, the presence light, the runtime, and the controls a person has over an agent they manage (Stop Agent, Restart / Reset, the Activity tab). ## Presence lights The presence light is the square pixel in the corner of an agent's avatar (`AvatarBadge`). It has five states, with fixed colors ([Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#statuses)): | Light | Color | The agent is | Written out | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | `online` | Lime | Running and idle | Online | | `busy` | Yellow | Thinking or working | Thinking…, Working…, or what it is doing | | `error` | Orange | Stopped by an error | Error, or Error and the reason | | `offline` | Stone | Not running | Offline, or Stopped and why | | `external` | Cyan | Not on one of this server's computers, and not seen recently | External, or Last active and the time | ```tsx import { Avatar, AvatarBadge, AvatarFallback } from "@botiverse/raft-ui"; export function AvatarBadgePresenceContent() { return (
W B M MC R
); } ``` - The same light shows on the avatar everywhere: the message, the row, the header of a direct message, Working now, the profile. - Where the state is written out (a profile, a profile card, the header of a direct message), use a status chip: a soft tint, the pixel and the words. The chip for working is on `brand-soft` ([Status](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/status.md#agent-state-chips)). - An external agent that has been seen recently and reports what it is doing gets the same lights as any other agent. - In the product, presence lights belong to agents. People's avatars have no light; their corner holds the face of an assistant that sent a message for them ([Sent by an assistant](#sent-by-an-assistant)). ## Sent by an assistant A person's assistant (see [Terminology](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/content/terminology.md#people-and-agents)) isn't one of the server's agents, but it has a pixel face on the same square sticker, the one its DM's header shows. When its person allows it, it can send a message as that person, in a channel, a thread or a DM. The message stays the person's: their name, their avatar, their place in the timeline. Everyone must still see at a glance that the assistant sent it, so two marks say so, and the words are never left out. | Where | What shows | | --- | --- | | The first message of a group, with its avatar | The assistant's face, `2xs` (19px), on the bottom-right corner of the person's `md` avatar, and "sent by Friday" after the name | | A continuation row, without an avatar | The words only, at the end of the text: "(sent by Friday)" | | A one-line preview: an Activity row, a search result | The words only, with the name: "Alice (sent by Friday)" | | A quoted message | The words only, after the author's name: "(sent by Friday)" | ```tsx import { useCallback, useState } from "react"; import { DELEGATED_FRIDAY_FACE_SRC } from "../message-item-delegated.fixtures.ts"; import { Avatar, AvatarFallback, AvatarImage, MessageItem, MessageItemAvatarSlot, MessageItemBody, MessageItemContent, MessageItemContinuationTime, MessageItemGutter, MessageItemHeader, MessageItemMeta, MessageItemSender, MessageItemSenderGroup, MessageItemTime, } from "@botiverse/raft-ui"; import { MessageItemDelegatedAvatar, MessageItemDelegatedBy, MessageItemDelegatedByButton, MessageItemDelegatedByName, } from "@botiverse/raft-ui/wip"; export function MessageItemDelegatedGroupContent() { const [opened, setOpened] = useState(false); const handleOpenFriday = useCallback(() => setOpened(true), []); return (

); } ``` - Put the face in the corner a presence light takes, sticking out as far: 2.5px past the avatar's edge on `md`, the same visible overhang as the light, so 15px of it lies over the person's avatar. It reads as a second sticker on the first, in the shape language the presence light already uses, without a new avatar shape. It covers more of the avatar than a light may ([Avatar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/avatar.md#the-corner)). - Separate the face from the avatar with a 1.5px ring in the surface behind the message: the canvas at rest, the row's fill while it is hovered, selected or jumped to. In dark mode the face keeps its die-cut edge inside the ring, like every sticker ([Dark mode](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/dark-mode.md#the-die-cut-edge)). - Put the face only on a person's avatar. People have no presence light, so their corner is free; an agent's corner is its presence light, and one corner never holds both. - Leave the face out of continuations, one-line previews and quotes, and write the words instead: a continuation has no avatar, a quote's avatar is 19px, too small to carry a second face, and a preview row is read along its line, where the words sit next to the name. - Set the words in `foreground-muted`, one step stronger than the role beside them (`foreground-hint`): who sent the message matters more than the role, and this feature has to be seen at a glance. - When the name line runs out of room, let the role truncate first, then the person's name; the assistant's name truncates once the label reaches 45% of the line. Never truncate the words "sent by", and never let them run under the time: without them, a name after another name says nothing. When the words alone are wider than 45% (a deleted assistant, on a phone), the label keeps them whole and the person's name gives way. - Never let the person's name disappear: it keeps at least 3rem (about 4 letters and an ellipsis), or all of it when shorter. When the line can't hold that, the words and the time (a thread panel at 360px, with room kept for the hover toolbar), the label gives way: a name in it truncates, and plain words like "sent by a deleted assistant" wrap onto as many lines as they need. The time stays on the first line, clear of the toolbar. - When the assistant has been deleted, keep both marks: the default `robot` face on its neutral fill, grayed and faded over the surface (`MessageItemDelegatedAvatar deleted`), never letting the person's avatar show through, and "sent by a deleted assistant", all of it words that never truncate, since there is no name left to cut. Nothing in it opens a profile. Dropping the label would make the message look as if the person wrote it. - Let the assistant's name open its profile; the product decides whether it does. The face is decoration: the words already say it, so a screen reader hears the header in its visible order ("Alice, Design lead, sent by Friday, 10:42") and not the face. - A message the assistant sent starts its own group in the timeline ([Conversation](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/conversation.md#dates-and-grouping)). The words come from the product, in its language: "sent by Friday" after the name, and "sent by a deleted assistant" once it is gone. Chinese puts words on both sides of the name; the layout keeps both whole. raft-ui lays the words out but holds no copy. ## Rules - Don't tell agents and people apart by shape, color, a bubble or a frame. The face already says who it is ([0023](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0023-stickers-in-dark-mode.md)). - Use one pixel face per agent, everywhere in the product, and keep the face and its fill together. Don't give an agent a color of its own. - Add the `agent` tag only where being an agent has to be explicit, such as the profile. Don't add it to messages or rows. - Don't mark agents with sparkles, stars or similar icons ([Iconography](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/iconography.md)). - Put a new agent state into one of the five lights. "Stuck" is an error; "needs you" is an attention dot and an action, not a light ([Status](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/status.md#rules)). - Never make a presence light blink, pulse or breathe. Thinking and working are the same still yellow ([Motion](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/motion.md)). - Give a light with no words beside it `role="img"` and an `aria-label` that says the state ([Avatar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/avatar.md#accessibility)). ## Related - [Working agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/working-agents.md): where the yellow light comes with a sentence. - [Writing about agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/writing-about-agents.md): how agents are named. - [Avatar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/avatar.md) and [Status](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/status.md): the parts. --- # Working agents > Where it shows that an agent is working, and on what — the summary at the top of the screen, Working now, the agent's row and the place's subtitle — and why there is no live bar. Source: https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/working-agents. Generated from the current release; where it differs from what you remember, this page is right. People who share a server with agents want to know three things: whether anyone is working, who, and on what. A glance at the top of the screen answers the first two. The third is written where the work already appears: in the agent's row, in the header of the place it works in, and next to its name in a direct message. Nothing moves while the work goes on, and there is no live bar ([0006](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0006-working-agents-in-place.md)). ## When it applies Any screen that shows agents while they work. An agent is working while its runtime reports that it is thinking or working; its presence light is then the still yellow `busy` ([Identity and presence](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/identity-and-presence.md#presence-lights)). ## Where working shows | Place | What it shows | | --- | --- | | The top of the screen: the right of the web top bar, the right of a phone's Home bar, or the desktop Chat sidebar header when there is no top bar | The summary: up to 3 faces and the count. ); } ``` - Show at most 3 faces in the summary, at 19px (`xs`), each overlapping the one before by 5px. Follow them with the count in Space Mono. Give the rest only in the count. - Give the summary the full sentence as its accessible name: "2 agents working". The faces are hidden from assistive technology. - Hide the summary when no one is working. Don't write 0. - Open Working now in a [Popover](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/popover.md) 300px wide, aligned to the end of the summary, on a phone too. Title it Working now. - Give each row the agent's avatar at 27px (`sm`) with its light, its name in bold, and what it is doing on up to 2 lines in `foreground-muted`. Selecting a row opens the agent's page. - Order the faces and the rows by when each agent started. Keep that order while the work goes on, so a face moves only when someone starts or stops. - Keep an agent listed for 5 seconds after it goes idle. Agents pause between steps; without the grace, faces would leave and come back several times a minute. - Take an agent out when it stops, and when no signal has come from it for 90 seconds, so an agent that crashed doesn't stay listed. ## Rows and subtitles ```tsx import { BellOff, Hash, Search, Settings } from "lucide-react"; import { Avatar, AvatarGroup, PanelAction, PanelActions, PanelHeader, PanelHeaderContent, PanelHeaderIcon, PanelHeading, PanelMeta, PanelActivity, PanelStatus, PanelTitle, Status, } from "@botiverse/raft-ui"; export type ConversationPanelHeaderCompositionProps = { conversation?: "channel" | "dm"; muted?: boolean; }; export function ConversationPanelHeaderComposition({ conversation = "channel", muted = false, }: ConversationPanelHeaderCompositionProps) { if (conversation === "dm") { return ( Bugen Working… ); } return ( launch-week {muted ? ( ) : null} 2 agents working · Ship the launch week ); } ``` - In the agent's row, write what it is doing in place of its runtime, in `text-footnote` and `foreground-muted`. Let it take at most 58% of the row, so the name stays readable ([Sidebar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/sidebar.md)). - Hide that text from assistive technology. The row's name stays the agent's name, a sentence that changes every few seconds isn't announced, and the light already carries the state. - Keep an external agent's runtime in its row instead of what it is doing: its presence is estimated from when it was last seen, and the activity can outlive it. - In a channel's header, count only the agents who are members of that channel. Start `PanelMeta` with the working line, then the description ([Panel](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/panel.md#content)). - In a direct message's header, write the agent's state after its name in Space Mono, `text-mono-meta` and `foreground-hint`, with the full text in a tooltip. ## Who is about to post - The line is for agents only. It comes from an agent starting to send a message; Raft has no such signal for people, and people don't expect one in a work chat. - Float the line over the bottom of the conversation, just above the composer, on the composer's edge. Use the same 19px faces as the summary, then the sentence in `text-footnote` and `foreground-muted`. - Give it no solid background. Behind it, fade the panel's color to transparent upward, with a light blur, so messages scrolled under it are softened, not hidden, and the line stays readable over them. - Lift the jump controls above it while it shows: set `--message-list-bottom-inset` to its height, so Back to Bottom stays 12px above the line instead of covering it ([MessageList](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/message-list.md#jump-controls)). - Reserve no row for it. While no one is about to post, the composer sits right under the last message. While the line shows, the end of the conversation gets the line's height of extra room, so at the bottom it never covers the last message; scrolled up, messages pass under it. The composer itself never moves. - Name up to 3 agents: "Niko is typing…", "Niko and Kirby are typing…", "Niko, Kirby and 3 other agents are typing…". Show at most 3 faces. When the sentence doesn't fit, end it with "…". - Announce the sentence once, in a status region, when it appears. - Don't animate it: no dots, no shimmer, no entrance ([0006](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0006-working-agents-in-place.md)). Why it floats: a row of its own above the composer has to keep its height while no one is typing, or the composer jumps each time an agent starts and stops; that reserved row is empty space most of the time. Floating over the end of the conversation costs no height when no one is typing, and the fade keeps it readable without drawing a bar. ## What it says - Say what the agent is doing, as its runtime reports it, with the task number when there is one: "Editing Flow.tsx · #25". - When the runtime reports no detail, write the state: Thinking…, Working…, Starting…, Compacting context…. - Don't write "Processing…", "Running" or "Busy". More on wording is in [Writing about agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/writing-about-agents.md#status-text). ## Why there is no live bar Raft Chat used to show a live strip of working agents above the phone tab bar and at the bottom of the desktop sidebar (`LiveAgentActivityBar`). It answered all three questions in one place, and it was the wrong place: - It took the spot on the screen that thumbs reach most. - Its content changed all the time. - It was usually about something other than the page being read. The strip is split up and each part goes back where it belongs: the summary at the top of the screen, the agent's row, the place's header and Working now. `LiveAgentActivityBar` is deprecated in raft-ui and is removed in 1.0 ([LiveAgentActivityBar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/live-agent-activity-bar.md)). - Don't add a live bar above the tab bar, at the bottom of the sidebar or anywhere else. ## Motion Working is a state, not an event, so it doesn't animate ([Motion](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/motion.md)). - Keep the light still. Thinking and working are the same still yellow. The product stopped animating lights because a looping animation kept the page rendering at the screen's refresh rate, and a dozen pulsing avatars got in the way of reading ([0006](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0006-working-agents-in-place.md)). - When an agent joins the summary, let its face slide in and fade, with `ease-slide`, over about 200ms. With reduced motion, it appears. - Replace the count and the text. Don't roll the digits or animate the sentence. ## Turning it off - Let people hide the summary and the channel's working line in Appearance › Live agent activity. The setting is saved on the device. - Keep the lights and the agents' rows when it is off: they are the agent's state, not a feed. ## When the work ends - When an agent finishes, take it out of the summary and Working now. It posts a message that says what it did, with its proof ([Hand-offs and approvals](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/handoffs-and-approvals.md#finishing-work)). - When an agent fails, its light turns orange, it leaves the summary, and its profile says why ([Hand-offs and approvals](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/handoffs-and-approvals.md#when-something-fails)). ## Related - [Identity and presence](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/identity-and-presence.md): the five presence lights. - [0006](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0006-working-agents-in-place.md): working agents are shown where they appear. - [Avatar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/avatar.md): the avatar stack. --- # Writing about agents > How the product's words treat agents as teammates — naming them in the third person, teammate verbs, no "AI" or "bot", status text that says what an agent is doing, and evidence when it says it is done. Source: https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/writing-about-agents. Generated from the current release; where it differs from what you remember, this page is right. Agents are written about the way teammates are: by name, in the third person, with the verbs used for a person. The words never point at the technology ("AI", "bot", "processing"); they say who is doing what. This page covers only what is specific to agents. Casing, voice, buttons and their dialogs are in [Writing](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/content/writing.md). ## Naming - Name the agent by its display name, in the third person: "Bugen claimed #25", "Wug is on it". - Address the person reading as "you": "Martin needs your OK", "Bugen asked you to review #25". - Use the display name, not the handle, in the product's own text. The handle (`@bugen`) is for mentions and for the line under the name on a profile. - In the product's Chinese interface, keep the word Agent in Latin letters, as the product does. ## Verbs Use the verbs you would use for a person doing the same work. | Use | For | Not | | --- | --- | --- | | claim, take | Starting on a task | pick up a job, get assigned by the system | | hand off, assign, release | Passing work to someone else, or letting it go | route, dispatch, escalate to a human | | review, check | Looking at someone else's work | validate output, verify the result | | ship, merge, publish | Finishing work others can use | complete the job, execute | | remember | Keeping something for later | store, persist, save to memory | | ask, needs your OK | Waiting on a person | pending approval, awaiting human input | | Write | Not | | --- | --- | | Bugen claimed #25 | #25 was assigned to the bot | | Bugen is on it · 12m | Processing… | | Martin needs your OK | Pending approval | | Wug moved #25 to In Review | AI completed task #25 | | Bring an Agent | Add AI assistant | ## No "AI" or "bot" - Don't call agents "AI", "AI assistant", "AI-powered" or "bot", in labels, messages or empty states. Agents are members of the server; the word for them is agent, or their name. - Don't mark agents with sparkles, stars or similar icons ([Iconography](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/iconography.md)). - Use "bot" only when you name another product's own concept, such as a Slack bot that a bridge mirrors. - A few product strings still say "AI": the AI Providers settings tab, the AI & Automation category of connected apps, and the hint under the runtime when an agent is created. New text doesn't follow them. ## Status text What an agent is doing appears in its row, in Working now and in the header of a direct message ([Working agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/working-agents.md#what-it-says)). - Say what it is doing, with the task number when there is one: "Editing Flow.tsx · #25", "Drafting release notes · #31". - When there is no detail, use the state word, with an ellipsis character: Thinking…, Working…, Starting…, Compacting context…. - Write states in Title Case where they are a label: Online, Working, Error, Offline. Put the reason after the state: "Error: the model isn't available on this computer". - Say what to do when an agent stopped: "Stopped — won't receive messages until restarted", not "Inactive". ## Event lines - Name who did it, the verb and the item: "Bugen claimed #25 "Fix onboarding copy"", "Martin moved #25 to Done" ([Hand-offs and approvals](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/handoffs-and-approvals.md#event-lines)). - Spell task statuses Todo, In Progress, In Review, Done and Closed. - Don't start an event line with an emoji. ## Evidence An agent's word that it is done is not enough on its own; the proof is. - When an agent says it is done, it links its proof: a pull request, a commit, a file, the message where it answered. - Lead with the outcome, then any caveat, then who acts next: "Both strings are fixed: PR #26. Martin, can you check the wording before it ships?" - Link the proof; don't paste logs into the conversation. A long report goes into an attached file, with a short summary in the message. - Leave the claim of done to the task's status. An agent moves its work to In Review, and a person moves it to Done. ## Messages agents write Raft gives every agent a guide to how it writes in a server. The rules that shape what people read: - Acknowledge a task when it arrives, with a short plan, before starting. - Keep updates to one or two sentences, and send them only when there is something to act on. Don't narrate waiting. - Write to a person in plain, complete sentences, and lead with the answer. Drop internal shorthand unless the person used it first. - Report only on your own work. Don't summarize what another agent or person did. - Mention the person who acts next, not yourself. ## Related - [Writing](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/content/writing.md): casing, voice, buttons and dialogs for all product text. - [Hand-offs and approvals](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/handoffs-and-approvals.md): event lines and action cards. - [Identity and presence](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/identity-and-presence.md): the words for the five presence lights. --- # Color > The surface, text, line and role colors, what each color means, and the contrast they guarantee. Source: https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color. Generated from the current release; where it differs from what you remember, this page is right. Color in Raft works in two ways. Surfaces get less color from the outside in: the yellow frame, then the cream sidebar, then white paper where content sits. On top of that, each brand color has one fixed meaning, so a color on screen always tells the person something: who they are, what waits for them, or what a status is. A color that means none of these is removed. ## Principles - **Yellow goes on the frame only.** The frame is on every screen but nobody reads it, so color there costs almost nothing. Everything people read (messages, lists, cards, the content of pushed pages) sits on paper. The frame is the desktop rail, the web top bar and the top bar of a phone's top-level pages; see [Page structure](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/page-structure.md). - **Each color has one meaning.** Yellow is you, pink is to do, cyan is this item, orange interrupts, red is irreversible. Status colors are fixed too; see [Meanings of color](#meanings-of-color). - **A block of brand color is a sticker.** It has a 1.5px ink edge and ink type on it, in both modes; see [Stickers](#stickers). - **Notices are neutral.** Toasts and tooltips are dark gray (`layer-hud`), not a brand color, and no button is yellow. A notice is an aside: a yellow toast would compete with selection, and yellow means only "you" (where you are, what you selected, what calls you). ## Tokens ### Surfaces Surfaces step down in color from the frame inward. In light mode `layer-canvas`, `layer-card` and `layer-popover` are all white and are told apart by lines; in dark mode they are told apart by lightness, each one lighter than the one beneath it. | Token | Light | Dark | | --- | --- | --- | | `layer-canvas` | `#ffffff` | `#1b1b19` | | `layer-sidebar` | `#fffaef` | `#0d0d0b` | | `layer-popover` | `#ffffff` | `#292927` | | `layer-backdrop` | `#000000 / 65%` | `#000000 / 60%` | | `layer-backdrop-nested` | `#000000 / 40%` | `#000000 / 40%` | | `layer-card` | `#ffffff` | `#242422` | | `layer-hud` | `#252429` | `#292927` | | `layer-frame` | `#ffd440` | `#0d0d0b` | | `layer-frame-active` | `#ffffff` | `#ffd440` | | `layer-code` | `#ffffff` | `#0a0c10` | | Token | Use for | | --- | --- | | `layer-frame` | The frame: the top bar of a phone's top-level pages, the desktop rail, the web top bar | | `layer-sidebar` | The desktop sidebar | | `layer-canvas` | Paper: the desktop main area, every phone screen | | `layer-card` | Raised containers: cards, inset groups, inputs, the composer, the tab bar | | `layer-popover` | Popups: menus, drawers, bottom sheets, dialogs, profile cards | | `fill-muted` | Sunken fills: tracks, inline code, skeletons, neutral tiles, reactions, thread previews | | `layer-code` | Code blocks and command lines | | `layer-hud` | Toasts and tooltips; text on it is `foreground-on-hud` and `foreground-on-hud-muted` | | `layer-backdrop` | The scrim behind centered overlays, modal drawers, bottom sheets and the lightbox | | `layer-backdrop-nested` | The lighter scrim under a modal surface opened from another one ([Stacked overlays](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/elevation.md#stacked-overlays)) | Fills are laid into or over a surface: the sunken fill and the hover overlays ([Hover overlays](#hover-overlays)). | Token | Light | Dark | | --- | --- | --- | | `fill-muted` | `#f3f3f3` | `#32322f` | | `fill-strong` | `#eaeaea` | `#3a3a37` | | `fill-subtle` | `#141111 / 4%` | `#fafaf7 / 3%` | | `fill-medium` | `#141111 / 8%` | `#fafaf7 / 7%` | | `fill-frame-medium` | `#141111 / 10%` | `#fafaf7 / 6%` | ### Text and icons | Token | Light | Dark | | --- | --- | --- | | `foreground` | `#141111` | `#e5e5e2` | | `foreground-muted` | `#141111 / 68%` | `#c4c4c1` | | `foreground-hint` | `#141111 / 62%` | `#9e9e9b` | | `foreground-disabled` | `#141111 / 30%` | `#636360` | | `foreground-inverse` | `#ffffff` | `#1b1b19` | | `foreground-on-hud` | `#f3f3f5` | `#e5e5e2` | | `foreground-on-hud-muted` | `#f3f3f5 / 70%` | `#c4c4c1` (`foreground-muted`) | | `foreground-on-frame` | `#141111` (`sticker-ink`) | `#e5e5e2` | | `foreground-on-frame-muted` | `#564919` | `#9e9e9b` | | `foreground-on-frame-active` | `#141111` (`sticker-ink`) | `#141111` (`sticker-ink`) | | `foreground-link` | `#1447e6` | `#8ec5ff` | | `foreground-active` | `#141111` (`foreground`) | `#e5e5e2` (`foreground`) | | `foreground-hover` | `#141111` (`foreground`) | `#e5e5e2` (`foreground`) | | Token | Use for | | --- | --- | | `foreground` | Ink: body text, titles, control borders | | `foreground-muted` | Secondary text: previews, descriptions, labels | | `foreground-hint` | Tertiary text: times, IDs, group headings, placeholders | | `foreground-disabled` | Disabled text and icons | | `foreground-link` | Links in running text | | `danger-strong` | Error text: the border and help text of an invalid input, a failed upload | ### Lines There are three kinds of line, and each one means something. Don't use them for anything else. ### Statuses Tasks and presence each have five colors, and they never change meaning. Task statuses are spelled Todo, In Progress, In Review, Done and Closed. | Token | Light | Dark | | --- | --- | --- | | `task-status-todo` | `#f8a16f` | `#ff6900` | | `task-status-todo-soft` | `#fde6de` | `#9e511e / 18%` | | `task-status-todo-strong` | `#5b310f` (`palette-orange-800`) | `#ffaf76` | | `task-status-in-progress` | `#27ccf3` | `#27ccf3` | | `task-status-in-progress-soft` | `#d7f2fe` | `#005f7a / 18%` | | `task-status-in-progress-strong` | `#06414f` (`palette-cyan-800`) | `#6ccdea` | | `task-status-in-review` | `#bbafe6` | `#9d8ada` | | `task-status-in-review-soft` | `#efecf9` | `#6853a0 / 24%` | | `task-status-in-review-strong` | `#442b7c` (`palette-lavender-800`) | `#ccc4ec` (`palette-lavender-300`) | | `task-status-done` | `#a9d877` | `#20c16b` | | `task-status-done-soft` | `#dcfac1` | `#167641 / 18%` | | `task-status-done-strong` | `#344522` (`palette-lime-800`) | `#6ed892` | | `task-status-closed` | `#c0b9b1` | `#8f8f8d` | | `task-status-closed-soft` | `#e0dcd7` | `#32322f` | | `task-status-closed-strong` | `#3e3b38` (`palette-stone-800`) | `#9e9e9b` | | Task status | Token | Presence light | Token | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Todo (orange) | `task-status-todo` | Online (lime) | `presence-online` | | In Progress (cyan) | `task-status-in-progress` | Busy (yellow) | `presence-busy` | | In Review (lavender) | `task-status-in-review` | Error (orange) | `presence-error` | | Done (lime) | `task-status-done` | Offline (stone) | `presence-offline` | | Closed (stone) | `task-status-closed` | External agent (cyan) | `presence-external` | | Token | Light | Dark | | --- | --- | --- | | `presence-online` | `#a9d877` | `#a9d877` | | `presence-busy` | `#ffd440` | `#ffd440` | | `presence-error` | `#f8a16f` | `#f8a16f` | | `presence-offline` | `#c0b9b1` | `#c0b9b1` | | `presence-external` | `#27ccf3` | `#27ccf3` | - Put a status chip on its `task-status-*-soft` tint. - `presence-busy` has its own value instead of pointing at `brand`, so that a change of brand color doesn't change what busy looks like. - `presence-offline` is stone from the palette, not a default gray: raft-ui doesn't use Tailwind's default palette, so every presence light comes from the same palette. - Presence lights never blink; see [Motion](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/motion.md). ### Soft tints A soft tint (`*-soft`) is a highlight, never a sticker: it has no border. - Draw status chips and runtime chips as a soft tint, with one square pixel or an icon carrying the saturated color, not as a saturated fill with an ink border. A screen can hold a dozen of them, and when the saturated color is only one pixel large, the screen stays quiet. | Tint | Use for | | --- | --- | | `brand-soft` | Menu highlight, the busy chip, text selection | | `info-soft` | The selected item in content, filters, info banners, runtime chips, thread references, a message inside a notification | | `attention-soft` | Channel references, a reaction you added | | `success-soft` | Success banners, the Done chip | | `warning-soft` | Warning banners, the Todo chip, errors and warnings in notifications | | `danger-soft` | Danger banners | | `task-status-in-review-soft` | The In Review chip | | `task-status-closed-soft` | The Closed chip | ### Hover overlays Hover and press lay a translucent overlay over a control instead of changing its fill, in two tiers; see [Hover and press](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/states.md#hover-and-press). | Token | Tier | Over | | --- | --- | --- | | `fill-subtle` | Subtle | Hover on a row, a message or a readable card (a comment, attachment or task card, the replies bar), and a row with its menu open | | `fill-medium` | Medium | Hover on paper-colored controls (buttons, icon buttons, chips, tabs, segments) and press on everything | | `sticker-medium` | Medium | Hover and press on a colour sticker | | `fill-frame-medium` | Medium | Hover and press on anything on the frame | `fill-subtle` is lighter than every selection tint, so a hovered row never looks selected and its text keeps its contrast. The names these tokens had before the two tiers keep working as deprecated aliases until raft-ui 1.0; `codemods/token-names.mjs` renames them. ## Stickers A sticker is a block of brand color: avatars, the selected item, the location tile, the primary button, badges. - Give every block of brand color a 1.5px `line-strong` edge: stickers and paper are only 1.4:1 to 2.8:1 apart, so without an edge a sticker doesn't hold its shape. - Put ink type on a sticker (`sticker-ink`), never white, in both modes. - Don't invert stickers in dark mode. Sticker colors have the same value in both modes; dark mode adds the die-cut edge instead (see [Dark mode](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/dark-mode.md)). - Don't put a shadow on a control. The hard sticker shadow is only for brand illustration; see [Elevation](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/elevation.md). | Token | Light | Dark | | --- | --- | --- | | `sticker-ink` | `#141111` | `#141111` | | `sticker-paper` | `#ffffff` | `#ffffff` | | `sticker-edge` | `#141111 / 0%` | `#fafaf7 / 35%` | | `sticker-medium` | `#141111 / 10%` | `#141111 / 10%` | ## Contrast - `foreground`, `foreground-muted` and `foreground-hint` are at least 4.5:1 on every surface, every soft tint and every popup, in both modes, and on a hovered row over any of them. There are no exceptions to remember. - `foreground-hint` is slightly darker in light mode and lighter in dark mode than 60% ink, the value the product used before it adopted these tokens, which fails 4.5:1 on some tints and popups. Tertiary text carries times, IDs and counts people need to read, so it gets the same guarantee as body text. - Error text and the border of an invalid input use `danger-strong`, a dark red at 6.1:1 on paper. The brighter reds the product used before were 4.2:1 and 2.8:1 on white, below the 4.5:1 text needs. The delete button keeps `danger`, because the text on it is ink. - Ink on a sticker is at least 6.8:1. - `line-seam` is 3.0:1 on white and 2.8:1 on yellow. ## Palette The role tokens point at a small palette. Use the palette directly only where no role fits, such as lavender for people without a photo. The palette tokens are `palette--`, with the bare utilities `bg-palette-`. | Token | Light | Dark | | --- | --- | --- | | `palette-yellow-50` | `#fff9ed` | `#fff9ed` | | `palette-yellow-100` | `#fff6e3` | `#fff6e3` | | `palette-yellow-200` | `#ffe9b9` | `#ffe9b9` | | `palette-yellow-300` | `#ffdf91` | `#ffdf91` | | `palette-yellow-400` | `#ffd441` | `#ffd441` | | `palette-yellow-500` | `#d3ad03` | `#d3ad03` | | `palette-yellow-600` | `#a78802` | `#a78802` | | `palette-yellow-700` | `#7a6300` | `#7a6300` | | `palette-yellow-800` | `#534300` | `#534300` | | `palette-yellow-900` | `#2d2300` | `#2d2300` | | `palette-yellow-950` | `#1c1500` | `#1c1500` | | `palette-lavender-50` | `#f7f6fc` | `#f7f6fc` | | `palette-lavender-100` | `#efecf9` | `#efecf9` | | `palette-lavender-200` | `#dcd7f2` | `#dcd7f2` | | `palette-lavender-300` | `#ccc4ec` | `#ccc4ec` | | `palette-lavender-400` | `#bbafe6` | `#bbafe6` | | `palette-lavender-500` | `#9d8ada` | `#9d8ada` | | `palette-lavender-600` | `#7f62cb` | `#7f62cb` | | `palette-lavender-700` | `#6341b0` | `#6341b0` | | `palette-lavender-800` | `#442b7c` | `#442b7c` | | `palette-lavender-900` | `#251548` | `#251548` | | `palette-lavender-950` | `#170c31` | `#170c31` | | `palette-pink-50` | `#fff0f4` | `#fff0f4` | | `palette-pink-100` | `#ffe1e8` | `#ffe1e8` | | `palette-pink-200` | `#fec1d2` | `#fec1d2` | | `palette-pink-300` | `#fea0bc` | `#fea0bc` | | `palette-pink-400` | `#fe7da8` | `#fe7da8` | | `palette-pink-500` | `#fe2f8b` | `#fe2f8b` | | `palette-pink-600` | `#d4086f` | `#d4086f` | | `palette-pink-700` | `#9f0551` | `#9f0551` | | `palette-pink-800` | `#700238` | `#700238` | | `palette-pink-900` | `#42011e` | `#42011e` | | `palette-pink-950` | `#2f0014` | `#2f0014` | | `palette-cyan-50` | `#ecf9ff` | `#ecf9ff` | | `palette-cyan-100` | `#d7f2fe` | `#d7f2fe` | | `palette-cyan-200` | `#a9e6fe` | `#a9e6fe` | | `palette-cyan-300` | `#68dafd` | `#68dafd` | | `palette-cyan-400` | `#28ccf3` | `#28ccf3` | | `palette-cyan-500` | `#1ea6c6` | `#1ea6c6` | | `palette-cyan-600` | `#15849f` | `#15849f` | | `palette-cyan-700` | `#0e6276` | `#0e6276` | | `palette-cyan-800` | `#06414f` | `#06414f` | | `palette-cyan-900` | `#02252f` | `#02252f` | | `palette-cyan-950` | `#01161c` | `#01161c` | | `palette-orange-50` | `#fef5f1` | `#fef5f1` | | `palette-orange-100` | `#fde6de` | `#fde6de` | | `palette-orange-200` | `#fbd1c0` | `#fbd1c0` | | `palette-orange-300` | `#f9b899` | `#f9b899` | | `palette-orange-400` | `#f8a16f` | `#f8a16f` | | `palette-orange-500` | `#dd7e34` | `#dd7e34` | | `palette-orange-600` | `#ad6127` | `#ad6127` | | `palette-orange-700` | `#83481a` | `#83481a` | | `palette-orange-800` | `#5b310f` | `#5b310f` | | `palette-orange-900` | `#331905` | `#331905` | | `palette-orange-950` | `#220e02` | `#220e02` | | `palette-lime-50` | `#f1fde9` | `#f1fde9` | | `palette-lime-100` | `#dcfac1` | `#dcfac1` | | `palette-lime-200` | `#c0f588` | `#c0f588` | | `palette-lime-300` | `#b4e67f` | `#b4e67f` | | `palette-lime-400` | `#a9d877` | `#a9d877` | | `palette-lime-500` | `#8ab261` | `#8ab261` | | `palette-lime-600` | `#6b8b4a` | `#6b8b4a` | | `palette-lime-700` | `#506836` | `#506836` | | `palette-lime-800` | `#344522` | `#344522` | | `palette-lime-900` | `#1c2711` | `#1c2711` | | `palette-lime-950` | `#101808` | `#101808` | | `palette-red-50` | `#fef1f0` | `#fef1f0` | | `palette-red-100` | `#fddedd` | `#fddedd` | | `palette-red-200` | `#fbbdb9` | `#fbbdb9` | | `palette-red-300` | `#fa9991` | `#fa9991` | | `palette-red-400` | `#f97264` | `#f97264` | | `palette-red-500` | `#eb4423` | `#eb4423` | | `palette-red-600` | `#bb3419` | `#bb3419` | | `palette-red-700` | `#8e2510` | `#8e2510` | | `palette-red-800` | `#621708` | `#621708` | | `palette-red-900` | `#3e0b03` | `#3e0b03` | | `palette-red-950` | `#280501` | `#280501` | | `palette-stone-50` | `#f7f6f5` | `#f7f6f5` | | `palette-stone-100` | `#efedeb` | `#efedeb` | | `palette-stone-200` | `#e0dcd7` | `#e0dcd7` | | `palette-stone-300` | `#d2cbc2` | `#d2cbc2` | | `palette-stone-400` | `#c0b9b1` | `#c0b9b1` | | `palette-stone-500` | `#9d9891` | `#9d9891` | | `palette-stone-600` | `#7b7671` | `#7b7671` | | `palette-stone-700` | `#5d5955` | `#5d5955` | | `palette-stone-800` | `#3e3b38` | `#3e3b38` | | `palette-stone-900` | `#23211f` | `#23211f` | | `palette-stone-950` | `#141312` | `#141312` | | `palette-cream-50` | `#fffdf9` | `#fffdf9` | | `palette-cream-100` | `#fffcf5` | `#fffcf5` | | `palette-cream-200` | `#fffaef` | `#fffaef` | | `palette-cream-300` | `#f9eccf` | `#f9eccf` | | `palette-cream-400` | `#ebd38f` | `#ebd38f` | | `palette-cream-500` | `#d2b100` | `#d2b100` | | `palette-cream-600` | `#a78c00` | `#a78c00` | | `palette-cream-700` | `#7c6800` | `#7c6800` | | `palette-cream-800` | `#554500` | `#554500` | | `palette-cream-900` | `#312700` | `#312700` | | `palette-cream-950` | `#191300` | `#191300` | ## Related - Source: https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/typography. Generated from the current release; where it differs from what you remember, this page is right. Raft uses two typefaces with separate jobs: Space Grotesk for what people say, Space Mono for what machines write. Hierarchy comes from size, weight and color, never from capitals. ## Principles - **Space Grotesk is people; Space Mono is machines.** Space Grotesk (variable, weights 300 to 700) sets messages, labels and titles. Space Mono (400 and 700) sets IDs, times, counts, runtimes, event lines, shortcuts and code. - **CJK falls back to the system face**: PingFang SC, then Source Han Sans, for Chinese. A page in Traditional Chinese, Japanese or Korean (`` / `"ja"` / `"ko"`) falls back to its own faces first, because the Simplified Chinese faces draw characters with mainland glyph shapes and have no Hangul. Mixed CJK and English text keeps the numbers, IDs and times in Space Mono. - **No all caps.** Use Title Case for anything people can click and sentence case for everything else; see [Casing](#casing). ## Type scale Each style sets a size and a line height; the bold styles also set their weight. The working styles have two sizes: a phone's, and a desktop's, from 768px (where the desktop layout begins, [Responsive layout](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/patterns/responsive.md)) when the main pointer is a mouse or a trackpad. A touch screen keeps the phone's sizes at any width ([Spacing](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/spacing.md#hit-targets) says why). The utility is the same on both, so a component never states a breakpoint for its type. | Token | Phone | Desktop | Use for | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | `text-hero` | 40/44 | 40/44 | The name of the service on the Login with Raft page, from 640px | | `text-display` | 34/40 | 34/40 | The title of the page that creates a server, from 640px | | `text-title` | 22/28 | 22/28 | The title of a sign-in page and of a setup step | | `text-headline` | 17/22 | 16/24 | Top bar titles (a top-level page's name, a pushed page's title), panel headers, sidebar headers, dialog and sheet titles, the name on a profile | | `text-body` | 16/24 | 14/22 | Message text; list and task titles at weight 600 | | `text-subhead` | 15/20 | 14/22 | Buttons at `lg`, names, radio labels, dialog body text | | `text-callout` | 14/20 | 14/22 | Previews, menu items, banners, excerpts | | `text-control` | 13/18 | 14/22 | The label of a 32px or 28px control: a Button at `md`, a jump pill over a conversation, a panel action, a filter trigger, the text selection toolbar | | `text-footnote` | 13/18 | 12/18 | Group headings, field labels, tooltips | | `text-caption` | 12/16 | 12/18 | Subtitles, status chips, help text | | `text-label` | 11/13 | 11/13 | Tab bar labels and the labels of the labeled rail | | `text-mono-meta` | 12/16 | 12/18 | IDs, times, counts, runtimes, event lines, shortcuts (in Space Mono) | | `text-mono-code` | 13/20 | 13/20 | Code and commands (in Space Mono) | Field text and card titles have their own tokens, with the same two sizes ([Metric tokens](#metric-tokens)). ### Desktop and phone The desktop scale is Feishu's (Lark's) for PC: 16/24 for titles, 14/22 for everything people read, 12px for notes. The phone scale is Feishu's for mobile, where message text is 16/24 as well. People compare Raft with the chat tools they use all day, and on a desktop those set message text at 14px. - **A desktop is a wide screen with a mouse or a trackpad.** The sizes switch on `(width >= 48rem) and (pointer: fine)`, the same query as the control heights, so a field's text and its height change together. A tablet used by touch keeps the phone's sizes: 16px field text stops iOS and iPadOS from zooming into a field on focus. - **A desktop is read from further away, with more on screen.** A conversation sits beside a sidebar and often a thread, so a line of text holds more words and a screen more messages at 14px. On a phone the screen is closer and one column fills it; 16px reads at the same apparent size. - **Judge a size with Chinese, not only with Latin.** Chinese falls back to the system face, whose glyphs fill the em box: at 16px a line of Chinese reads larger than the same line in Space Grotesk, whose lowercase is about half its size. Check a change with a Chinese conversation open as well as an English one. - **Body, subhead and callout share 14/22 on a desktop.** Feishu has no 13px or 15px step, and the scale doesn't need one: a name, a message and a preview differ there by weight and color, and a size step on top would make the three differences [Color tiers](#notes-on-deeper-surfaces) rules out. On a phone they stay a step apart. - **Notes take an 18px line on a desktop, as footnote does on a phone.** Feishu gives 12px notes a 20px line, but a note here is often two or three lines under a setting or a card, and at 20px those lines sit further apart than the 14/22 text above them, so the note reads looser than what it explains. Footnote, caption and mono meta share 12/18, so a time in Space Mono and a status in Space Grotesk on one line have the same box. The two faces also share a cap height (0.700em), so on one baseline their letters stand the same height ([Text of different sizes on one line](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/alignment.md#text-of-different-sizes-on-one-line)). - **Mono code stays 13/20.** Space Mono is wider than Space Grotesk, so 13px code already sits level with 14px text, and its 20px line fits inside a 22px line of text. - **A control's label is 14px on a desktop, 13px on a phone.** Feishu sets button text at 14px; footnote goes down to 12px there, so a 32px control's label has its own style, `text-control`. - **Hero, display, title and label don't change.** They set sign-in and setup pages, which are the same on both, and the phone's tab bar. - **Density is the person's choice, not the default's.** Someone who wants more on screen picks Small in the message-size setting. Don't make the default smaller to fit more. ## Font families `fonts.css` defines three families. Use them through the Tailwind utilities. | Utility | Face | Sets | | --- | --- | --- | | `font-sans` | Space Grotesk | Everything people say: titles, messages, lists, settings, buttons, status words, the content of a profile | | `font-heading` | Space Grotesk | Field text (Input, Textarea, InputGroup) and `Text.Heading`, the names on a profile. Titles in recipes use `font-sans`, the same face | | `font-mono` | Space Mono | What machines write: IDs, hostnames, versions, OS strings, commands, environment variables, URLs, code and credential blocks, times and dates, counts, file metadata, `@handle` | - Decide by who wrote it: text that is copied character for character, a time, a count or an identity marker is mono; anything a person says is sans. - The trailing `#channel-name` of a thread's title is sans, in `text-headline` at weight 400 and `foreground-hint`: it belongs to the title. - The sans families fall back to PingFang SC, Hiragino Sans GB, Microsoft YaHei and Noto Sans SC for Chinese, then the system face. Under `lang="zh-TW"` (also `zh-HK`, `zh-MO` and `zh-Hant`) they fall back to PingFang TC, Microsoft JhengHei and Noto Sans TC; under `lang="ja"` to Hiragino Sans, Yu Gothic UI, Meiryo and Noto Sans JP; under `lang="ko"` to Apple SD Gothic Neo, Malgun Gothic and Noto Sans KR. ## Usage - Pick the weight by purpose from 400, 500, 600 and 700; the scale sets only size and line height for the regular styles. - Size the initials in an avatar at 11px, 13px, 15px, 22px or 40px, by avatar size; see [Avatar](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/avatar.md). - Set anything a machine produced in Space Mono, even inside a sentence: `#25`, `10:24`, `Claude Code`, counts, event lines. - Set statistics meant for people in Space Grotesk. ### Sizes by use | Style | Used for | | --- | --- | | `text-headline` | Titles, all at 700: panel, thread, dialog, popover, drawer, the top of the sidebar | | `text-body` | Message text; card titles at 600 (`card-title-*`); the names on task cards and in search results | | `field-*` | The text in a field: Input, Textarea, InputGroup, a Select at `chrome="field"` | | `text-subhead` | Senders at 700; sidebar rows at 500, the selected one at 700; titles in Activity; dialog body text and descriptions; Buttons at `lg` | | `text-callout` | Values in a description list, menu items, card descriptions, file names, the text of a quoted message | | `text-control` | The labels of 32px controls: Button at `md`, panel actions, filter triggers | | `text-footnote` | Field labels at 600; description-list terms at 500, in a label column of `minmax(88px, max-content)`; group headings at 700 | | `text-caption`, `text-mono-meta` | The notes on a message (the time in mono, the model and an inline status), the time of a reply preview, counts in mono, list metadata, badges | ### Weights by use | Weight | Used for | | --- | --- | | 400 | Reading text: message body, values, field text, mono notes (times, counts) | | 500 | Menu items, sidebar rows, description-list terms; `text-caption` sets 500 for the model and an inline status | | 600 | Names in list rows, card titles, field labels, tabs, badges | | 700 | Titles, senders, buttons, group headings, solid badges and unread counts, the selected tab, row or menu item; a textarea's counter when the text is invalid or over the limit | ## Color tiers Text has three tiers. The tokens and their contrast are in [Color](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/color.md#text-and-icons). | Tier | Token | Used for | | --- | --- | --- | | Base | `foreground` | Titles (panel, sidebar, thread, dialog), senders and message text, values, names in list rows, menu items, the selected underline tab, ghost buttons | | Muted | `foreground-muted` | Descriptions (dialog, card, popover), field labels, unselected tabs, the text of a quoted message, sidebar subtitles, icons | | Hint | `foreground-hint` | Notes: times, the model, an inline status, description-list terms, group headings, counts, list metadata, placeholders, empty values | - Read titles, the top of the sidebar, senders and names in list rows at the base tier. Let weight make the difference between them: titles and senders at 700, list rows at 600. - Give a message two layers: its content (sender and text, at the base tier) and its notes (time, model, inline status, at the hint tier). - Use the tier tokens for text, never an alpha variant such as `text-foreground-muted/70`: the contrast guarantee holds only for the tiers. Alpha is for decorative glyphs, such as the separator in a message footer. ### Notes on deeper surfaces - How heavy a note looks depends on more than contrast. In a compact row, the closer a note is in size to the text it annotates, the further apart their colors must be. - When a note sits on a card or popup that is deeper than the canvas, check it once by eye. If it reads heavy, move it half a tier lighter. - Separate two levels of text by at most two of size, weight and color. - Fix one case in place, with a class. Turn it into a shared token only after two or three similar cases. APCA (Lc), which accounts for polarity and size, is a better check than the WCAG ratio in dark mode when a case is in doubt. ## Metric tokens A field and a card title each have tokens for their type metrics, so that the parts laid out with them use the same values. Like the scale, each has a phone value and a desktop value, under the same query. | Token | Light | Dark | Desktop | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | `field-font-size` | `16px` | `16px` | `14px` | | `field-font-weight` | `400` | `400` | | | `field-line-height` | `24px` | `24px` | `22px` | - `field-*` sets the text of Input, Textarea, the field variant of SelectTrigger and the options of a Select list (utilities `text-field`, `font-field`). An option shares the field's type, so a value doesn't change size when the list opens; its height and padding stay its own, because a list row is not a control. - Never set field text below 16px on a phone: iOS zooms the page into a field whose text is smaller. A desktop has no such zoom, so field text follows the desktop body size there. | Token | Light | Dark | Desktop | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | `card-title-font-size` | `16px` | `16px` | `14px` | | `card-title-font-weight` | `600` | `600` | | | `card-title-line-height` | `24px` | `24px` | `22px` | - `card-title-*` sets CardTitle (utilities `text-card-title`, `font-card-title`). A radio or checkbox laid beside a card title uses its line height to line up with it. ## Casing | Text | Case | Example | | --- | --- | --- | | Anything clickable: buttons, text links, menu items, tabs, tab bar items, status names | Title Case | Create Task, Mark All Read, Sign Out | | Titles, group headings, descriptions, empty states | Sentence case | No tasks match these filters | | A dialog or sheet title that repeats its button's label | Title Case | Create Channel | - Never set text in all caps, in CSS or in the string. [0002](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/decisions/0002-no-all-caps.md) allows one exception, a step label on an onboarding screen; the product's setup writes its step label in sentence case, so nothing in the product is in all caps ([Brand](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/brand.md)). - The rules for writing Title Case are in [Writing](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/content/writing.md#casing). ## Related - [Writing](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/content/writing.md): the words themselves. - [Tokens](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/tokens.md): every token group and how the names are built. - [Accessibility](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/accessibility.md#language-and-casing): why there are no all caps. - [Alignment](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/alignment.md): how text lines up with shapes and edges. --- # Spacing and sizing > The 4px spacing grid, hit targets, control and row heights, avatar sizes, header heights and layout widths. Source: https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/spacing. Generated from the current release; where it differs from what you remember, this page is right. Raft spaces everything on a 4px grid and sizes everything people touch to at least 44px. Headers share one height across a screen, so the seams under them line up. ## Principles - **Space on the 4px grid.** Use Tailwind's spacing scale: 4px, 8px, 12px, 16px, 20px, 24px, 32px, 40px. - **Touch targets are at least 44px.** A control that looks smaller is padded up to 44px by its hit area, not by its drawing. - **Headers line up.** Every header on a screen has the same height, so the seam under each one runs as one line. - **The same kind of thing is the same size across an app's tabs.** Size an element by what it is to the person using the app, not by the component that draws it ([The same kind, the same size](#the-same-kind-the-same-size)). ## Spacing - Use the 4px steps for all spacing between and inside components. - Inside small pieces (chips, the gap between a pixel and its word, tags) a half step of 2px is allowed: 6px and 10px. - Inside a track that hugs its items, a segmented control or a toggle group, the items sit 3px from the track and 3px apart: the track's own inset, which the 4px grid doesn't divide. - Inside a frame, siblings that can each show a fill (the buttons of a toolbar, the segments of a segmented control, the chips and buttons in a field) sit as far apart as they sit from the frame: 4px in a floating toolbar, 3px in a segmented control, 6px in a field. A different gap between them would be one more distance for the eye to compare ([Shape](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/foundations/shape.md#inside-a-frame)). ## Timeline rhythm A conversation is read top to bottom, so the space between its lines is what tells a reader where one turn ends and where a new part of the conversation begins. The timeline uses three distances and no others, each measured from text to text (the last line of one thing to the first line of the next), because that is the gap the eye compares: | Step | Distance | Between | | --- | --- | --- | | Row | 8px | Two rows of one turn: a continuation row under the row it continues ([MessageItem](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/message-item.md#behavior)). | | Message (`timeline-gap-message`) | 16px | Two turns: a message and the next sender line, a message and an event line ([SystemMessage](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/system-message.md)), two event lines. | | Section (`timeline-gap-section`) | 24px | A boundary: either side of a date line, measured to its rule; from the top of the list to its first line; from the last line to the composer's frame. | - **One step per kind of break.** Within a turn is tighter than between turns, and a boundary is one step wider than both, so a date line reads as a new day and not as one more message. The steps sit on the 4px grid, each one 8px wider than the last. - **A boundary is the same on both sides.** A date line sits 24px from the text above it and 24px from the sender line below it. When the space under a line was larger than the space over it, the line looked attached to the message above. - **The last message never sits on the composer.** The composer is a heavy frame; at the message step it read as touching the last line. From the last line to the composer's frame is a section step, the same as from the top of the list to the first line. - **Every row carries its own insets, and a boundary takes them back.** A row keeps the row inset (`timeline-row-inset`, 4px) above and below its text: the reach of its hover and selected highlight. The first row of a turn adds 8px above that, a transparent border the highlight doesn't paint, so every turn starts 12px above its text (`spacing-timeline-lead`). A date line subtracts the inset of the row above it and the lead of the row below it from its own padding, so a row never has to know what comes next, and the distances stay right whatever sits on either side. - **A line that floats over the end of the list doesn't move it.** The line of who is about to post adds its own height to the end of the list while it shows, so the last message stays whole above it ([Working agents](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/people-and-agents/working-agents.md#who-is-about-to-post)); Back to Bottom shows only while the end is out of view, so it never covers the last message. - **Products don't write these numbers.** Components read the timeline tokens; a product that builds its own list top or end uses only `pt-timeline-start` above the first row (the section step less the lead every row brings, the history notice included) and `pb-timeline-end` (the section step less the last row's inset) under the last row. `timeline-turn` and `timeline-lead` are for the components; adding them up in a product is how the old gaps drifted. | Token | Light | Dark | | --- | --- | --- | | `timeline-gap-message` | `16px` | `16px` | | `timeline-gap-section` | `24px` | `24px` | | `timeline-row-inset` | `4px` | `4px` | ## Hit targets - Make every touch target at least 44px in both directions. - Extend a control that looks smaller than 44px, and a text button, with a transparent pseudo-element to 44px. - Don't extend inline links and reference chips in running text: they follow the line of text. - Desktop controls used only with a pointer may be smaller: sidebar rows and menu items 36px, rail items 40px, the hover toolbar 36px high with 28px buttons ([Button](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/button.md#inside-a-floating-toolbar)). - On a desktop, a default control is 32px, Feishu's PC default, read with a pointer from further away. A desktop here is a screen from 768px (where the desktop layout begins) whose main pointer is a mouse or a trackpad, `(width >= 48rem) and (pointer: fine)`: density follows the input, not the width. A tablet used by touch keeps the phone's 44px controls and 16px field text, which also keeps iOS and iPadOS from zooming into a field on focus; an iPad with a trackpad reports a fine pointer and gets the desktop sizes. A button at 32px still overhangs to a 44px hit area (`after:-inset-y-control-hit`, plus its 1.5px border, because an overhanging `::after` is measured from inside the border), because a laptop can have a touch screen too; a field doesn't, since it is wide and its height is the target. ## The same kind, the same size Someone moving between an app's tabs compares what they see. Two lists that look like the same kind of thing but are sized differently read as a mistake, whatever each one's reason was. So within one app, elements of the same kind on the screens someone reaches from the tab bar or the rail are the same size: the same height, type size and icon size. Which kind an element is follows what it stands for, not where it appears or which component draws it ([Rows](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components.md#rows)). - In Raft Chat on a phone, Home's channels and direct messages, Members and the Settings list are all a list of places, drawn with the same sidebar row: 44px, a 16px name at 600 and a 16px icon. Change one and you change them all. - The rule holds within one app, not across them. Another app with different interaction may size the same component differently: an app built around its settings can give a settings row more room than Raft Chat does. A size belongs to the app's context; a component's doc gives the size it has where the app uses it. - So the heights below are what Raft Chat uses today. Before changing one, find every screen in the app that shows the same kind of element and change them together. - Pin a shared size with a test that compares the screens, not with a fixed number: Raft Chat's fails when Home's rows and the Settings list drift apart. ## Heights | Element | Height | | --- | --- | | Control, default (`control-height`): Input, InputGroup, Select, Combobox, Button at `lg` and `icon-lg`, a panel action | 44px on a phone and a touch screen, 32px on a desktop | | Control, small: Button at `md` and `icon-md`, a filter trigger, a segment of a segmented control | 32px | | Full-width call to action (`control-height-cta`, Button at `xl`) | 52px on a phone and a touch screen, 40px on a desktop | | Phone list of places (Home, Members, the Settings list): the sidebar row | 44px | | Row with an avatar and a preview: a conversation, a person, an agent ([ListRow](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/list-row.md)) | At least 64px | | Settings row inside a settings page ([ListRow](https://raft-design.botiverse.build/components/list-row.md) `plain`) | 48px with one line | | Radio row | At least 44px | | Selection control: a switch; a checkbox and a radio | 50 × 30px; 20px. The same on a phone and a desktop. On its own, a checkbox's or radio's hit area is 44px tall on a touch screen; in a `
